Charlène and Albert of Monaco have had many ups and downs since they met in 2000. But so far the Monegasque royal couple has stuck together – at least officially.

And although Charlène (far right) sat at the table next to none other than fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, who was chatting animatedly with Albert’s sister Caroline, Charlène and Albert only had eyes for each other. © IMAGO/ABACAPRESS3 / 18Traditionally, the Monegasque people plunge into the cool water at Larvotto Beach shortly before Christmas. It was great fun for Charlène, who ended her swimming career in 2007, as she showed alongside Albert in 2009. © IMAGO/ABACAPRESS4 / 18Although they were not yet officially engaged, Charlène was allowed to accompany Prince Albert to the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden in Stockholm on June 19, 2010. After the civil wedding there was a tame kiss. © IMAGO/PanoramiC7 / 18A day later, the bride’s tears at the church wedding caused a stir. There had previously been rumors that Charlène wanted to run away before her wedding to Albert. She later clarified in an interview with The Times Weekend Magazine: “It was all so overwhelming, there were all these mixed emotions about the rumors, and of course there was tension, and I immediately burst into tears. Then I burst into tears even more because I thought: ‘Oh no, now the whole world has seen me cry.'” © IMAGO/Milestone Media8 / 18But the tears dried quickly and Charlène and Albert exchanged vows . In her elegant wedding dress by Armani, Charlène enchanted onlookers on site and royal fans around the world on their screens. © IMAGO/ABACAPRESS9 / 18A highlight for the two sports fans, who were Olympians themselves: the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. In 2012, Charlène showed alongside Albert that you can also have a hearty party with her. © IMAGO/ABACAPRESS11 / 18 The Monegasques had been waiting longingly for this news. On May 30, 2014, the palace announced that Princess Charlène was pregnant. At an event in Beverly Hilly on October 8th, Charlène showed off her baby bump beautifully – just one day later it became official that she and Albert are looking forward to twins. © IMAGO/YAY Images12 / 18Double happiness: On December 10, 2014, twins Jacques and Gabriella were born. As hereditary prince, Prince Jacques takes first place in the line of succession, his sister follows in second place. Albert has two illegitimate children, Jazmin Grace Grimaldi, born in 1992, and Alexandre Coste, who was born in 2003. In 2002 Rainier III changed. the constitution states that only children from a marriage can inherit, which excludes both Jazmin and Alexandre. © IMAGO/E-PRESS PHOTO.com13 / 18Mandatory appointment for the royal family: On Monaco’s national day on November 19, 2019, Charlène and Albert appeared with their twins Jacques and Gabriella on the balcony of the palace, with Charlène appearing extremely dejected. © IMAGO/ABACAPRESS14 / 18 Charlène caused a stir in 2020 with her look while handing out pre-Christmas presents in Monaco. The mask was due to Corona, the shaved hair a silent cry for help? Shortly before, a new paternity suit had been filed against Prince Albert, which was not confirmed, but certainly burdened Charlène. © IMAGO/ABACAPRESS15 / 18A sad greeting on the national holiday: Jacques and Gabriella had to do without their mom for most of 2021. After Charlène traveled to South Africa to get involved in the fight against rhino poaching, her return to the principality was repeatedly delayed due to a severe ear, nose and throat infection. After a short stopover in Monaco in November, Charlène had to be treated in a Swiss specialist clinic for emotional and physical exhaustion. © IMAGO/ABACAPRESS16 / 18Charlène’s first official appearance after her return to Monaco at the Formula E award ceremony in April 2022 was a bit stiff. © IMAGO/Andreas Beil17 / 18After the French magazine Royauté claimed in spring 2023 that the Monegasque royal couple was in the process of separating, the palace felt compelled to issue an official denial. The press office announced that the rumors were “completely unfounded”. Shortly afterwards, Charlène and Albert appeared hand in hand at the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters tennis tournament. © IMAGO/PanoramiC18 / 18On the occasion of St. John’s Eve, the Monegasque royal family appeared united on the balcony of the palace on June 23, 2023 – exactly 13 stormy years after Charlène and Albert’s engagement. © IMAGO/ABACAPRESS

Monaco – fun-loving, sporty, carefree – that’s what it has to be Charlene von Monaco (45) had an effect on Prince Albert II (65) when he met the former professional swimmer for the first time over twenty years ago at the Mare Nostrum swimming competition in Monaco. Charlène, then still under her birth name Wittstock, won the gold medal in the 200 meter backstroke, attracting the attention of the sports-loving Grimaldi heir.

A year after their engagement, Charlène and Albert finally walked down the aisle together on July 2, 2011. But shortly before the wedding, rumors began circulating that the native South African wanted to flee before the celebrations. Charlène’s tears at the wedding did the rest to make critics talk about an arranged marriage. Since then, Albert and Charlène have repeatedly been confronted with rumors of separation, and the birth of their twins Jacques and Gabriella on December 10, 2014 could not stop them. Recently it was even rumored that Charlène had fled from Monaco to a new life in Switzerland.
