As the city of Winterthur announces, city councilor Katrin Cometta officially put the charging station at Ackeretstrasse 17 in the Neuwiesenquartier into operation on Friday, November 1, 2024.

At two other locations – at Nordstrasse 4 in Äusseren Lind and at Bullingerstrasse 2 in Endliker – you can also fill up with electricity from Friday, November 1, 2024.

Make it easier to switch to electromobility

The number of electric cars in Winterthur is increasing step by step. With the pilot project “eCity Charge – charging stations in the neighborhood”, the city is supporting this switch to vehicles with climate-friendly drives.

The new, green and yellow marked parking spaces with charging stations for electric vehicles in the Blue Zone offer additional charging options in the area.

A significant portion of Winterthur’s population lives in buildings without private parking spaces. Many of these people use public parking spaces and do not have access to private charging stations.

The test operation with three electric charging stations makes it possible to gain experience about needs and use. The test phase lasts until October 2026. The evaluation of the pilot project forms the basis for a possible later expansion of the offer.

Recharge your batteries with climate-friendly energy

The three charging stations each have two connections with eleven kilowatt hours of power each and are part of Swisscharge’s Europe-wide charging network. There is a charge for purchasing electricity; the tariff for 2024 is 49 cents per kilowatt hour.

The electricity product “KlimaGold” is charged, and its CO2 emissions are fully compensated for. You can pay at the charging stations with standard charging cards, credit cards, TWINT or via the app.

To use the e-charging station, a parking disc must be clearly visible in the vehicle. Parking in the designated parking space is only permitted for charging.

Contribution to the net zero target

Mobility is responsible for around 45 percent of direct CO2 emissions in Winterthur.

In order to achieve Winterthur’s climate goal of “net zero 2040”, a reduction in motorized traffic and a switch to climate-friendly vehicle drives are necessary. At the same time, the charging infrastructure needs to be continually expanded.

In addition to the charging options at home, at work, while shopping or at your destination, the new public charging stations in the neighborhood are another piece of the puzzle in the development of a comprehensive charging network.

Compared to vehicles with combustion engines, electrically powered vehicles cause less environmental pollution. They are more efficient, cleaner and have a significantly better CO2 balance over the entire life cycle.

Information event on e-mobility

Uncertainties and myths are widespread around electromobility. How is e-mobility developing in Switzerland? Are there enough charging options? How long does it take to load? The “E-Mobility Climate Dialogue” event offers answers to these and other questions.

This will take place on Monday, November 11, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Superblock Forum at Pioneerstrasse 7.

Experts from the Winterthur city administration, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the Federal Office of Energy (BFE) will show what contribution electrification makes to the mobility of the future and are available to answer questions.

All interested people are cordially invited. Please register in advance using the registration form on the city’s website or via email.
