Kansas City authorities charged the two minors in connection with the shooting during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl championship parade.
In a statement, the Jackson County Family Court said the two minors are being held at the Juvenile Detention Center “on charges related to weapons and resisting arrest.”
“We anticipate that additional charges will be filed in the future as the Kansas City Police Department’s investigation continues,” added the document, which did not provide further information.
A mother of two was killed and 22 others were injured Wednesday when gunfire broke out amid crowds of fans who gathered outside Union Station to watch the parade. Police Chief Stacey Graves explained Thursday that the victims range from 8 to 47 years old, half are under 16 years old.
Police initially detained three youths, but released one after they determined he was not involved in the shooting. No charges have been filed against the other two and police continue to search for others who may have been involved and asked witnesses, victims and people who took video to call the emergency line.
Police spokeswoman Alayna González said in an email that police are working with the juvenile prosecutor’s office “to review the findings of the investigation and determine applicable charges.” The juvenile court system determines custody status in juvenile arrest cases.”
The shooting occurred despite the presence of more than 800 police in the building and surrounding areas, said Mayor Quinton Lucas, who attended the parade with his wife and mother and ran for cover when the shooting began. They do not expect to cancel the St. Patrick’s Day parade.
“We have parades all the time. I don’t think they will finish. We certainly recognize the public safety challenges and related issues,” Lucas said.
This was the third celebration parade since 2020, but the first to end with violence. People crowded the parade route, some even climbing trees and light poles to get a better view. Players rode on double-decker buses as DJs and drummers announced their arrival.
When the shooting began, the parade had just ended and the music was still playing. Some people thought they were fireworks. Many fell to the ground and others jumped over the barriers to run.
Police reported that about 1 million people probably attended the parade, which occurred in a city of 470,000 inhabitants and a metropolitan area of two million, although they clarified that only a few people caused the violence.
