Despite the rout that led to their elimination, the Los Angeles Chargers players want head coach Brandon Staley back in 2023.
Saturday, in a duel of the first playoff round, the California formation had a 27-0 lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars. She was ultimately defeated 31–30, which ended her campaign.
“We believe in Coach Staley and we believe in our staff,” said quarterback Juston Herbert, whose comments were reported by the NFL Network on Sunday.
“Anyone would be lucky to have a coach like Staley,” he added.
Running back Austin Ekeler and safety Derwin James also gave the 40-year-old a vote of confidence.
“We would be shocked [d’apprendre que Staley a perdu son emploi]. We want someone who gives us a chance and this guy gives us a chance,” Ekeler said.
“It’s my choice. He works so hard. Many of us believe in him in our locker room. I definitely believe in him,” said James.
Staley has been at the helm of the Chargers since the 2021 campaign, when he was unable to guide his post-season squad. He has maintained a 19-15 record since being hired.
