Dehradun. The journey of Char Dham has started from 25 April. During this, 16 mules have died in Kedarnath Dham so far. At the same time, 123 mule owners have been punished for cruelty to animals. All of them have been punished under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 for exploiting animals or not rearing them. This year, 6,500 mules were registered to transport pilgrims and goods on the 16 km long route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath.
Animal Husbandry Department Director Dr. Prem Kumar said that strict action is being taken against the mule and horse owners who do not follow the rules. An FIR has also been lodged against three mule owners in this regard. Dr Kumar said, “We are working round the clock to ensure the safety of animals in high altitude areas. Hot water arrangements have been made along the yatra route and trained veterinary doctors have been deployed.”

Meanwhile, around 100 animals found medically unfit by the department have been barred from handling. Dr Ashish Rawat, chief veterinary officer in Rudraprayag district, said, “We have stopped at least 95 animals from trekking due to health issues, as some were limping. While others had deep wounds and needed treatment. Around 500 animals were provided medical treatment in the last 15 days.”
Officials said the department has also imposed a daily limit of 4,000 mules on the Kedarnath trek. Besides this, the Rudraprayag district administration on Tuesday stopped the transportation of cattle from other districts fearing the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) as the state has recorded over 3,000 such cases in the last five days.
To avoid inhumanity with horses and mules, a plan was made to deploy 25 members of the Provincial Guard on foot. Along with this, jawans will also be deployed to monitor them. This time, during the Chardhan Yatra, hot water has been arranged for the horses at every kilometer from Gaurikund to Kedarnath Dham and a tin shed of 2,000 capacity has been made for the comfort of the horses. Let us inform that last year too many horses and mules had died during the Kedarnath Yatra.
