Characteristics of Heart Disease at a Young Age: Identifying Symptoms and Risks

Jakarta

Heart disease is synonymous with older people. However, heart disease can attack anyone, including those who are still young. That is the reason it is important to know the characteristics of heart disease at a young age.

Moreover, some symptoms of heart disease are often ignored. This is because many people think they will not experience serious conditions because they are still young.

In fact, the characteristics of heart disease can appear even from a young age. If not detected and given immediate intervention, these symptoms can get worse and even cause more serious complications.

What are the characteristics of heart disease at a young age? Here’s the review.

Characteristics of Heart Disease at a Young Age

1. Chest Pain

Chest pain is the most common characteristic of heart disease at a young age. Chest pain can be caused by blockages in the arteries.

Generally, this pain will last for several minutes. Chest pain can occur at any time, either during activity or while resting.

2. Snoring or snoring in sleep

Snoring is a common thing that occurs during sleep. But if the snoring is very loud and sounds like panting, it could be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

OSA is a condition where snoring results in interruption of breathing during sleep. This can reduce oxygen levels in the blood and cause carbon dioxide to build up. This condition makes the heart have to work harder to pump blood, which can increase the risk of heart disease.

3. Get Tired Easily

Does your body get tired easily even after doing light activities? Be careful, because this can be a sign of heart disease at a young age.

Fatigue can be caused by reduced oxygen and blood supply to the brain and muscles. The heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the needs of body tissues. As a result, blood that should be flowing to organs such as the muscles in the hands or feet is instead flowing to the heart and brain.

Apart from that, feeling tired when you wake up in the morning can also be an indication of heart problems. If this happens for several days, get yourself checked immediately to prevent the risk of a heart attack or other disease.

4. Chronic Cough

Continuous coughing can actually be a symptom of heart failure. In heart failure, heart contractions become weaker. This condition causes fluid to enter the lungs, triggering the body to eliminate the excess fluid by coughing.

Usually, coughing in heart failure will produce thick, white phlegm or accompanied by blood spots.

5. Pain in the left side of the body

Another characteristic of heart disease at a young age is pain or tenderness in the left side of the body. The pain usually appears first in the chest, then spreads to outside parts of the chest such as the shoulders or arms.

This pain can be an indication of blocked blood vessels or weakened heart muscle. This symptom needs to be watched out for because it could be a sign that someone is experiencing heart failure, coronary heart disease, pericarditis, etc.

6. Shortness of breath

Shortness of breath is not always an indication of a respiratory system disorder. Under certain conditions, shortness of breath can indicate that someone is experiencing heart problems.

Heart disease can make blood flow from the heart to the body’s organs not run smoothly. This can then cause shortness of breath.

Apart from appearing during activities, shortness of breath can also appear when resting or lying down. Usually, this is an indication that the person is experiencing heart failure.
