Waspada.co.id – Pregnant women are prone to anemia. This condition can put pregnant women in danger.
FKUI nutritionist, Nurul Ratna Mutu Manikam, said anemia is still a homework for Indonesia. This disease should not be underestimated, especially if it is experienced by pregnant women.
In Riskesdas 2013, the prevalence of pregnant women with anemia was recorded at 37.1 percent. The figure increased in 2018 to 48.9 percent.
“After being seen, the number of pregnant women with anemia is 6 percent young. There is a possibility that the mother has not prepared for pregnancy, lacks education, lacks understanding so that she thinks the important thing is to eat enough, without thinking about iron, “said Nurul in a webinar, some time ago.
It is said, if pregnant women experience anemia, especially due to iron deficiency, the impact is not only on the mother, but also on the baby she is carrying. Here are some of the dangers of anemia in pregnant women.
1. Bleeding complications during childbirth
The mother bleeds more during childbirth, followed by a drastic drop in hemoglobin.
2. Tired and lethargic
Pregnant women often feel tired, especially when the womb is old. However, anemia can worsen fatigue.
3. Risk of preterm birth
Mothers with anemia are at risk of giving birth prematurely. Babies born are also at risk of being born with a low weight or less than 2.5 kilograms.
Strive to meet iron needs from consumption of foods that contain high iron. Iron can be obtained from animal sources such as beef liver, red meat, egg yolks, chicken or duck, fish and other seafood.
You can also meet your iron needs from plant sources such as nuts, green vegetables, and whole grains. “To increase iron absorption, either consume vitamin C or ascorbic acid from fruit and vegetable juices,” added Nurul.
4. Enlargement of the heart muscle
The enlargement of the heart muscle, said Nurul, is actually an effect of the body’s automatic mechanism. When the iron content is low, red blood cells become imperfect and the function of carrying oxygen decreases.
In fact, the body’s cells need oxygen supply. As a result, when the iron content is less, the heart tries hard to pump so that oxygen needs are met.
In addition, anemia can also make pregnant women experience complaints of the heart and blood vessels such as a pounding heart and decreased blood pressure. (wol / cnnindonesia / man / d2)
