Chappell Roan confronted paparazzi on the VMAs red carpet: “Shut the f*** up”

The singer responded firmly after being insulted on the red carpet.

Chappell Roan, one of the most prominent emerging artists of the moment, experienced a tense moment on the red carpet of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. While posing for photographers before the ceremony, a paparazzi apparently yelled at her to “shut up,” which sparked an immediate and forceful response from the singer.

Dressed in an elaborate medieval-inspired outfit, Roan, 26, was quick to defend herself against the off-color comment. Spinning on her heel, the “Hot To Go” singer responded: “Shut the fuck up!” and added: “Not me, bitch!”

The incident, which was captured on camera, sparked reactions from both the audience and social media. Several users praised Roan for his direct response to defend himself.

The singer later spoke about the incident in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, where she explained that the situation had caused her a lot of anxiety. This is the first time Roan has attended a red carpet.

“It’s pretty overwhelming and scary. I think for someone who has… a lot of… anxiety when they’re yelled at… the red carpet is scary,” she confessed. “And I had to yell back. I yelled back! You can’t yell at me like that.”

Roan’s look did not go unnoticed at the event. The singer showed up in a long brown dress, complemented by a thick cross-shaped necklace.

Her long curly hair, dyed a vibrant fire red, was pulled back, further accentuating the medieval style she chose for the occasion.

Chappell Roan also performed on stage at the MTV VMAs on Wednesday. “Well, we have a theme, we always have a theme,” Roan said before the show began. Her performance did indeed feature her dressed in period armor.

Nervous about her first performance on the iconic stage, Roan admitted to feeling pressured by the technical intricacies of her performance. “There’s a lot of technical stuff that’s never happened to me before, but we’ve rehearsed so many times. I feel like this is the next step in my career, so it was like, ‘Wow, okay, it feels good to be here,’” she said in a previous interview.

Just a month ago, the singer had also spoken about how difficult it is for her to have to deal with harassment from some fans. In a series of posts, she made it clear that, although she is aware that this type of behavior is common in the lives of celebrities, she is not willing to accept it.

“I don’t care that abuse or harassment is normal for people who are famous, or a little bit famous, whatever. I don’t care that it’s normal,” she said in a video shared on TikTok.
