Chaotic Traffic Jams and Climate Activists Block Brenner Pass

AFP Big crowds on French highways today, like here near Bordeaux

NOS Nieuws•vandaag, 17:44

It is very busy today on various European roads to and from popular holiday destinations. In France, at the peak, just before noon, there was almost 1100 kilometers of traffic jams. This is reported by the ANWB. Road users had to be patient, especially on the Route du Soleil (from Paris to Montpellier), around Bordeaux and at the border with Spain.

There were also long traffic jams in other European countries today. This was the case in Switzerland, for example, where the delay at the Gotthard tunnel to the south increased to more than two hours. There was also a delay in the direction of the north. For the Mont Blanc tunnel from France to Italy, traffic had to take into account an hour waiting time.

In Germany, according to the ANWB, there was a lot of delay around Munich, near Hamburg and at the border with Austria. And in Belgium the roads around the Spa-Francorchamps circuit were full. Tomorrow the Grand Prix Formula 1 will be driven there.

Even more crowds are expected for next Saturday. The ANWB expects that there will be peak traffic in both directions, especially in France.

Quarrel on the Brenner Pass

The Brenner Pass, on the border of Italy and Austria, was blocked for some time by climate activists of the Last Generation climate movement. Seven of the nine activists stuck themselves on the A13 in the direction of Italy. This caused a traffic jam of about four kilometers. The blockade was over within an hour. According to the police, there were clashes between angry motorists and climate activists.

Last Generation has footage of the action posted online. It shows that people, presumably motorists, are trying to drag the climate protesters to the side. Police spoke of “tumultuous scenes”.
