As it turned out, their decision was a big mistake. The reason, four Malaysian National Team players are named Covid-19. They are Quentin Cheng, Faisal Halim, Khairulazhan and Akhyar Rashid.
The number could increase, considering that the top scorer for the 2020 AFF Cup from Malaysia, Safawi Rasid, is in the same room as Akhyar Rashid. Therefore, Tan Cheng Hoe encouraged the Malaysian Football Federation (FAM) to lobby the AFF so that they could bring in new players.
“We have sent a request to replace the player. This issue is also related to the Malaysian government’s policy. All players regardless of position must be ready,” said Tan Cheng Hoe quoting from Zing News, Saturday (11/12/2021).
As stated above, Stadium Astro wrote that the Malaysian national team could potentially withdraw from the 2020 AFF Cup if their wish to call in new players was not granted.
