Chaotic Scenes on Van Woustraat: Motorists Ignoring New Tram Track, Navigation Apps Sending Drivers Astray

Chaotic scenes on Van Woustraat. Since a week or two, part of the street has become a tram track and motorists are no longer allowed to drive onto Stadhouderskade there. But in practice it appears that almost no one adheres to this.

The new measure should ensure that only local traffic enters the neighborhood. Despite several signs, the situation is not clear to everyone. “I think it’s terrible, I don’t think I’m allowed to drive here at all,” says a motorist. “But where should I go?”

It also appears that some navigation apps still send the driver straight onto the tram track. And once there you come to an intersection with only a traffic light for cyclists and the trams.

“They are regularly sent back by the police,” says a shopkeeper. “That they have to go the other way. It just doesn’t seem to be clear.”

The South District is aware of the situation and is considering measures.

Response from spokesperson for the South district

“We are aware of the problem that many motorists ignore the intersection at the Van Woustraat with the Stadhouderskade. Several motorists have been approached about this and the conversations show that many drivers follow their navigation instead of the signs. Prior to the opening of the Van Woustraat has been in contact with various navigation service providers to communicate the new design. In practice, however, it appears that the new situation is not always properly communicated to the navigation. This has various causes. Apart from this, there are also motorists who ignore signs.

We are currently looking at whether we can solve this problem in the short term by installing additional signs. We also examine whether other measures are possible and desirable to convey the message that Van Woustraat is closed to through traffic. Consider, for example, the temporary deployment of traffic controllers.”

The renovated part of Van Woustraat was festively opened on December 22 by councilor Melanie van der Horst (Traffic) and district manager Rocco Piets. The redesign took six months, after which the municipality described this stretch of street as a ‘nice place to stay’.
