Chaotic Scenes at Copenhagen Half Marathon: Runners Collapsing at Finish Line

Several Danish media reported on Sunday afternoon about chaotic scenes during the Copenhagen Half Marathon in Copenhagen.

One of the Danish TV 2s reporters in the finish area describe having observed several runners “frozen on the ground” just before the finish line.

– Never happened before

– Several have been carried away on stretchers, and frustrated audience members have to act as nurses, while some call for doctors, writes the channel.

– We have a whole team that stands at the finish line and helps the runners, says director of Sparta Athletics and running, Dorte Vibjerg, to BT.

“Acute challenges”

Operations manager at Hovedstadens Beredskab, Martin Kjærsgaard, confirms opposite Extra Magazine that “urgent challenges” have arisen.

– We are there to support the region with hands and expertise, he says.

The operations manager states that the agency has been called in as more and more people have fallen over.

– We are now assisting with large resources, says Kjærsgaard.

Avisa’s reporter in the field reports total chaos at the scene:

There are ambulances and doctors running back and forth between people who have fallen over.

Opposite Ritzau, the emergency services state that around 50 people have so far received treatment from the emergency services on site.

– The situation developed in such a way that there were an unusually large number of incidents with participants who became unwell and needed help, emergency director Thomas Reimann told the news agency.

– Must prioritize hard

The event is organized by Sparta Athletics & Running.

The company’s managing director, Dorte Vibjerg, tells TV 2 that it is “very normal” for some to be injured during the event.

In terms of experience, she says, it is typically runners who have overexerted themselves and taken in too little liquid. She believes that the high temperature carries much of the explanation for the many collapsed runners.

Copenhagen is characterized by sun on Sunday, and the protractor shows 23 degrees.

The director states that no serious incidents have been reported, but that many have needed health care.

– We have to prioritize very hard when there are so many incidents. Those who need urgent help get help first. Those who are not in danger will therefore have to wait, says Vibjerg.

Norwegian profiles in action

Several Norwegian profiles have run in Copenhagen on Sunday. Henrik Ingebrigtsen ran his first half marathon, but tells NRK that he broke after around 20 kilometres.

– I promised everyone to wrestle if I felt any pain in my hamstring, thigh, Achilles or anything else. I wasn’t going to take any risks, says Ingebrigtsen to NRK.

Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal, on the other hand, finished sixth in 1.07.34. It is a Norwegian record since Ingrid Kristiansen’s unofficial Norwegian record was never measured (1.06.40 in 1987). She held the old official record of 1.08.31.

Sondre Nordstad Moen holds the Norwegian half marathon record (59.48). The European record is 59.13 and was set by Swiss Julien Wanders in February 2019.
