Chaotic PPDB, Ministry of Education and Culture: Not Age, but School Limitations

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Ministry of Education and Culture states that age regulation is not an obstacle to implementing new student admissions (PPDB) 2020/2021.

Acting Inspector General Ministry of Education and Culture Chatarina Muliana said the government had provided access to admission of new students this year as needed. “So age is not an obstacle,” Chatarina said in an online discussion, Sunday, June 28, 2020. “So if the priority (distance zoning) has entered, then another.”

On this year’s school zoning route the priority is the distance between the student’s house and the school. Age becomes a consideration when there are several candidates in the zoning with the same distance. “Age is a consideration if the distance is the same.”

According to him, every regulation in accepting students will certainly cause protests from parents as long as the facilities are inadequate. The main problem facing the world of education now is the limited number of educational facilities to accommodate new students. “If the problem is not resolved, it will continue to happen.”

At present, the facilities for high school level education in various provinces are more widely distributed in urban areas. The distribution of educational facilities is not evenly distributed in various regions, which causes problems always occur during the PPDB process.

The government has now abolished the national exam and is continuing to evaluate the education system in Indonesia. The main focus of the government at this time is not an evaluation of student grades or academic subjects.

“Of concern now is the governance of education,” he said.

The government cannot continue to rely on students’ academic grades to determine achievement. Because, each child has a different intelligence. “UN SMP has no social studies, but some are given strengths in PKN (citizenship education). How do they want to compete with children who are smart in science,” he said.

So far, he said, nearly 80 percent of students with good grades are tutors outside of school. So, those who are more economically disadvantaged are more likely to participate in the UN because they take lessons outside. “Those who took part in his parents’ tutors were businessmen and officials,” he said.

To equalize access to education and eliminate the stigma of favorite schools, the government has implemented a school zoning system for new student admissions since 2017.

Even the school zoning policy in PPDB also does not reduce academically smart rights. Students with high grades can still register both in zones one to 10. “If you come near to your house, you can get in faster. But if you only stick to grades, you have the opportunity to be scientific and academic. Whereas the talents of art and sports are what you are doing. to equalize access to education. “
