IThey are 35,000 to have gathered this Sunday in Brussels, according to the police. The demonstration, dubbed “Together for freedom”, started around 2 pm at the Brussels-North station. The organizers wanted to denounce the measures restricting freedom in the fight against the coronavirus, in particular the Covid Safe Ticket.
The police had to intervene several times throughout the afternoon. Shortly after the start of the demonstration, water cannons kicked in and tear gas was used. According to our colleagues, several dozen people had then left the official route. Fireworks were also reportedly fired at the police. Several officers are said to be injured, the police zone has not yet communicated a first assessment at the time of this writing.
Later that afternoon, footage also showed several police vehicles being vandalized by thugs. Other videos show scenes of chaos in the European Quarter. At around 5.30 p.m., the Brussels-Capital police zone announced the dislocation of the demonstration. Arrests were also made following the incidents that punctuated the afternoon.
The procession started at 1:25 p.m. instead of 2:00 p.m., given the world. Few people wear a mask. Many came to protest simply, without a sign.
“We denounce the restrictive measures of freedom, which did not constitute a structural solution for health care”, defended the organizers in their press release. The slogan of this mobilization is “Enough! “.
