A protest is currently under way in Bitola in support of Macedonian singer Lambe Alabakovski, who was arrested after setting fire to the city’s Bulgarian cultural club.
People gathered in the center in front of the police building. They blocked one of the main streets, demanding that Alabakovski be released immediately because they believe he is innocent, a Nova TV correspondent said.
According to the protesters, he had a motive for the arson of the Ivan Mihailov Cultural Center because his grandfather was killed by “Bulgarian fascists”.
Lambe Alabakovski is currently in custody in the town of Prilep, where he will remain for eight days.
According to the protesters, the accusation against him is too serious. However, the Bulgarian community in Bitola believes that it should be more difficult.
“Lambe Alabakovski did not need to be detained after pleading guilty, and all his life plans, such as returning to the music scene in Macedonia and his social status, do not indicate that he will escape,” said his lawyer, Dragan Georgiev.
“If he wanted to run away, he would run away immediately and will not admit his guilt,” Georgiev said.
The lawyer also doubts at the political moment in Lambe’s detention, but not because of party games, but because of the general situation in the country because of the dispute with Bulgaria. “What is happening with Bulgaria certainly has a great contribution,” Georgiev said.
