Access to several prisons in Catalonia was blocked by prison officials on Friday (March 15), complaining of a lack of security in the facilities, following the killing of a cook by an inmate this week.
Protesters gathered in the early hours of the morning in front of prisons, setting tires on fire or setting up barricades in some cases, responding to a call from industry unions.
One of the gatherings took place in front of the entrance to the Mas d’Enric prison, in the Tarragona region (northeast), where an inmate killed a kitchen worker on Wednesday before killing himself, according to police.
The attack, the cause of which remains “unknown” according to the police, has caused an uproar among prison officials, who are calling for the resignation of the head of justice in the regional government and are demanding more resources in the face of what they see as insecurity. that is increasing in prisons.

According to the High Court of Catalonia, the prisoner had been convicted “for a murder with a knife committed in 2016” and was serving an 11-year prison sentence.
“We have been faced for years in a situation of (…) insecurity and violence,” Alberto Gomet, CSIF’s prison coordinator in Catalonia, told AFP, citing an “increase in attacks”.
The Catalan government, which on Wednesday expressed its “concern” after the prison officer’s murder, invited union representatives to a meeting today, which they did not attend.
