Chaos Erupts in New York as Internet Stars Attempt Massive Giveaway

What a huge mess!

New York – An action by two internet stars triggered a large-scale police operation in New York. Twitch great Kai Cenat (21) and YouTuber Fanum (25) had promised their millions of fans to distribute game consoles and computers on Friday afternoon (local time) on Union Square in Manhattan. When the action did not start on time, thousands of people rioted.

Even before the announced start time, hundreds and eventually thousands of young people gathered on the square. When the giveaway didn’t start as planned, participants started to stop traffic and threw objects. The police responded with a large-scale operation.

Roads were closed, helicopters flew over the area, there were tumultuous scenes, the use of pepper spray and numerous arrests. Photos and videos show the chaos at the scene as police began dispersing the crowd.

The situation calmed down only slowly. New York police told Rolling Stone there were no injuries but asked that the area be avoided for a while. Around 65 people were arrested.

Twitch star Kai Cenat broadcast part of the action via live stream. He had announced the whole thing with a picture in which he and Fanum pose in front of an off-road vehicle and behind a barrier with the inscription “Do not cross the police line”. The Twitch streamers were reportedly giving away free PlayStation 5s to attendees.

When the nightmare was over, there was a press conference at which Mayor Eric Adams thanked the New York City Police Department (NYPD) for bringing the situation under control so quickly. “I want our streets to be full of life and joy. But they must be sure. That’s the most important.”

Twitch star Cenat was taken out of the crowd and questioned, the NYPD said. He’s facing charges. The action was not registered.
