A commotion occurred at the Maracana Stadium during the match Brazil vs Argentina. Could the Selecao be threatened with FIFA sanctions?
A commotion broke out when Brazil entertain Argentina in the fight Conmebol Zone 2026 World Cup Qualification at the Maracana Stadium, Wednesday (22/11/2023) morning WIB. Fans of both teams argued, until the police intervened.
Then, the police acted repressively towards Argentina fans. Team Tango fans were batoned and kicked in the stands.
The heat of the moment meant that the kick off was delayed. Players intervened to try to stop the commotion.
This situation put Brazil in the spotlight. According to outlet Globo, Brazil could be subject to severe FIFA sanctions. Globo cited FIFA Disciplinary Code Article 17, which states “associations and clubs are responsible for inappropriate behavior committed by one or more of their supporters.”
Globo also said that FIFA would launch an investigation into the chaos at Maracana. This means that there will be sanctions looming.
Brazil, as the host, is threatened with this punishment. Potential sanctions can include fines, playing one or more matches without spectators (or with limited spectators), a ban on playing in certain stadiums, an obligation to play on neutral fields, up to point deductions and expulsion from the competition.
If it is true that you will be sanctioned, then… Brazil obviously bad luck. Moreover, the hosts also lost Argentina with a score of 0-1 in that match, after Nicolas Otamendi broke through.
The defeat left Brazil stuck in 6th place in the Conmebol zone standings with 7 points from 6 matches. Meanwhile Argentina leads with 15 points. If they are deducted points, Brazil will be unlucky, even in danger of failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals.
