Crowds at the Barclays Center ran for security after a rumor spread that a gunman was in the area.
Thousands attended the Brooklyn venue for a high-profile boxing event between Geranto Davis and Rolando Romero.
Chaos erupted as attendees received reports of a shooting, prompting a stampede of people running for cover. Police confirmed injuries to a handful of people; some reports suggest as many as 10 were injured in the commotion.
Tennis star Naomi Osaka was at the boxing match and tweeted about sheltering in place after hearing the screams of an active shooter.
“I was right in the middle of Barclays and all of a sudden I heard screaming and saw people running, then they yelled at us that there was an active shooter and we had to huddle in a room and close the doors,” he tweeted.
Other social media posts showed the aftermath of Saturday’s stampede. Broken glass, abandoned tables and personal belongings littered parts of Barclays.
New York City Police officials said an investigation into the incident determined no shots were fired.
