Chaos as Cruise Autonomous Taxis Cause Traffic Jam in Austin, Texas

Autonomous taxis owned by Cruise caused real chaos at an intersection in Austin, Texas. They were photographed parked in the middle of a street, creating a huge traffic jam. Videos shared on social media show the fully autonomous vehicles lining up on a street late at night, some with emergency lights flashing while others try to maneuver around each other. Some of the vehicles are even located on the wrong side of the road.

This is not the first time that the company’s cars have caused such a traffic jam. Last month, about 10 vehicles blocked traffic in San Francisco. The most famous incident of randomly clustered Cruise cars happened last July, when more than a dozen prototypes stopped near an intersection, also in San Francisco.

Witnesses to the traffic jam reported that Cruise employees tried to clear the way by operating the cars remotely. A spokesperson told The Drive that the problem may have been caused by heavy foot and vehicle traffic.

“Pedestrian and vehicle traffic on the street was heavy,” the spokesman said. “Our cars are designed first and foremost to prioritize safety – and that includes using safety devices around pedestrians. Cruise is constantly monitoring its fleet and on Sunday morning we were alerted to the event with cars converging. We were able to we dealt with it and all cars left the area autonomously. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
