Chaos and Concerns: Local Vaccination Campaigns in Flanders

General practitioners and pharmacists were instructed to organize the vaccination campaign locally. During the summer months they worked hard to set up the logistics of the campaign, it says. The fact that there is still no clarity around the legal framework has plunged the field “into chaos”, which would “ideally” start less than a week before the vaccination against COVID-19, according to AADM.

The vaccination is not a concern as usual, says the doctors’ association. “GPs who choose to do this in a team must have certainty about the financial part, so that they can pay a supporting nurse, for example.” AADM advocates that whoever places the vaccine is immediately reimbursed. “Since the government gives the field the opportunity to organize itself as they wish, AADM also wants all these initiatives to be compensated equally.”

Jeroen van den Brandt, chairman of Domus Medica, does assure that patients will not be abandoned.

Vaccinations against flu and COVID-19 are recommended for about 2 million people in Flanders this fall. This includes people over the age of 65, people with a weakened immune system, pregnant women and those who work in healthcare.
