Chaos after a cable fire in Hamburg – more failures and delays

The train in the north is still stuck: On Friday, a cable burned at the Sternschanze in Hamburg – since then, thousands of train customers have been experiencing delays and train cancellations.

Long-distance traffic in northern Germany will also remain restricted on Sunday – since Friday there have been cancellations and delays in long-distance traffic on the routes of Deutsche Bahn after a cable fire.

On Friday night, a cable caught fire near Sternschanze station in Hamburg. The section is one of the busiest in Germany. All communication on this route between the interlockings runs via the affected cable, and the switches and signals are controlled via it, it was said on Friday.

According to a railway spokeswoman, the affected cable is a 1,000-wire copper cable. That would be very expensive to repair.

A railway spokesman for the dpa news agency said on Saturday afternoon that the disruption should be resolved by the end of the day. Now the Deutsche Bahn website states that train passengers in the north should still expect “serious impairment” in long-distance traffic on Sunday. It is now assumed that the disruption is likely to be resolved in the late afternoon hours of Sunday.

Travelers are encouraged to inquire about their connections in advance. Deutsche Bahn provides information on the current disruptions on its website.
