Actress and chanson singer Chantal Poullain received the highest state award, the Order of the Legion of Honor, at the French Embassy in Prague this Tuesday. She received it for the long-term mutual enrichment of Czech and French culture, as well as for the fact that she permanently contributed to the friendship between France and the Czech Republic.

The awarding of the order is also an appreciation of Chantal Poullain’s activities in the humanitarian field. French ambassador Alexis Dutertre presented the insignia of the knighthood to the sixty-seven-year-old native of Marseille. The ceremony was attended by friends and family, including the actor Bolek Polívka, with whom she lived until 2002, and their son Vladimír Polívka.

During the presentation, Dutertre highlighted three main features of Chantal Poullain’s life path: the decision to leave for love in Czechoslovakia during the communist dictatorship, her artistic career, and then also her personal commitment to the Archa Chantal Foundation, which she founded to support sick children.

He also mentioned that the artist had a remarkable career despite the restrictions of the totalitarian regime, to which, according to the ambassador, she brought humanity and truth.

Chantal Poullain was born in 1956 in Marseille. She graduated from the theater academy in Geneva, Switzerland, and studied ballet. After meeting the actor Boleslav Polívka, she moved to Czechoslovakia in 1982. In 1989, their son Vladimír was born, also an actor after studying at DAMU.

From the 1980s, the actress began to appear on the stage of the Na provázku Theater in Brno and later at the Bolka Polívky Theater. There, she performed in the famous production of The Clown and the Queen, from which a film of the same name by director Věra Chytilová was made in 1987.

After the revolution, Chantal Poullain guested at Klicper’s Theater in Hradec Králové, Prague’s Na Zábradlí Theater and the National Theatre. Between 2000 and 2016, she worked at Ungelt in Prague.

She played many drama and musical roles, guested with the 420people dance troupe, acted in film and television. With the Bolka Polívka Theater, he performs in the performances of Six dance hours in six weeks and Rebelka, and can also be seen at concerts of chansons performed by the trio of jazz saxophonist Štěpán Markovič.

The latest of several documentaries about her life is the film Chantal Poullain – My Life Odyssey by the Czech-Greek director George Agathonikiadis.

The Order of the Legion of Honor is the highest French state award, which is awarded by decree of the French President. It was founded in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte for outstanding civil or military services to the French nation. Czech bearers of the order include Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Václav Havel, director Miloš Forman, painter František Kupka, aviator František Fajtl, writer Milan Kundera and singer Marta Kubišová.

“Any award is nice, but that you should have more work in our pond? That doesn’t go hand in hand,” actress Ivana Chýlková said in the Spotlight show. | Video: Jakub Zuzánek
