South Korean Prosecutors Expand Probe into Land Purchases Linked to Former Lawmaker
South Korean prosecutors investigating potential impropriety surrounding President Yoon Seok-yeol and his wife have broadened their inquiry, raiding government offices and the homes of family members connected to a former lawmaker, Kim Young-sun.
On August 29th, a special investigative team from the Changwon District Prosecutor’s Office conducted searches at Changwon City Hall and the Gyeongnam Regional Office, focusing on departments involved in complex business dealings. The team seized data containing the selection process for the ‘Changwon 2nd National Industrial Complex."
The investigation centers on Myung Tae-gyun, a former regional office official currently serving a prison sentence. Prosecutors allege that Myung, who worked for Kim while he was in the National Assembly, used his influence to secure the selection of a new industrial center in Changwon in a way that benefited Kim. They are specifically looking at land purchases near the selected site, allegedly made by individuals close to Kim.
"Former Rep. Kim bought land near the proposed Changwon industrial complex site in the name of his sister-in-law when he was a member of the National Assembly,” Myung stated during questioning, according to prosecutors. They have identified a particular site in Uichang-gu, Buk-myeon as a potential target of this scheme.
While acknowledging awareness of his sister-in-law’s land purchase, former lawmaker Kim maintains he learned of it long after the fact.
