Anyone who catches damage in the windshield should not wait too long to repair or replace it. In addition to the possible impairment of visibility, speed is of the essence because the windshield has an important function in stiffening the body. All information on changing the windscreen and the costs incurred can be found in this article.
That is why the windshield is so important
The windshield is your most important line of sight to road traffic. Even if a small rockfall does not impair your view so much that you find it disturbing, the load can tear the pane further and then dangerously impair your view. The disk also serves to stabilize the body. Therefore, for your own protection and the protection of other road users, you should ensure that the windscreen is intact and that the windscreen is repaired or replaced quickly if it is damaged.

Under these circumstances the windshield must be changed
In addition to stabilizing the body and protecting against wind, insects, stones and weather, the windshield is of course primarily used to ensure that you can see the traffic. And at the latest when this view would be impaired even after a repair, there is no way around replacing the windshield – this is what the legislator prescribes.
As soon as your field of vision is restricted by cracks or holes, it is a hazard that needs to be addressed. The field of view is approximately the area of the windscreen wipers. In addition, the stone chips should not be less than 10 centimeters from the edge, as in these cases there is an increased risk of breakage. Repair is also prohibited if the cracks are larger than 2.5 centimeters, which is roughly the size of a two euro coin. And of course the windshields are also replaced if repairs would be uneconomical.

Workshop or windscreen specialist?
If changing the windshield is unavoidable, you have the choice of having this carried out by a classic car workshop or a window specialist. The specialist is more likely to have front windows from common vehicle models in stock. However, the specialist workshops are now often prepared to change the windshield and are also probably more familiar with electronics, which are increasingly found in windshields.
The insurance covers these costs
The cost of your insurance policy when changing lenses ultimately depends very much on the type of insurance you have. Partial or fully comprehensive insurance normally covers rockfall repairs. The normal accident liability insurance, however, does not cover the costs of such repairs. If you have taken out partially comprehensive insurance with a deductible, you will of course have to pay this contribution yourself. Usually this is 150 or 300 euros and makes up a certain part of the switching costs.

That’s how much the exchange costs
A change of the windscreen costs between 500 and 1000 euros, depending on the model and equipment. By the way, changing a side window costs around 200 euros and a new rear window around 500 euros. The working time only contributes a small part of the costs with only about one hour. When replacing a windshield, it is definitely worthwhile to regulate the damage through comprehensive insurance even if you have to contribute a deductible.
You should also keep this in mind
Nowadays, the windshield cooperates more and more frequently with assistance systems such as the rain sensor or the lane departure warning system, which is why the windows themselves have recently become considerably more expensive. Under no circumstances should you choose a cheaper lens that does not have the necessary sensors, as these assistance systems could then no longer ensure your safety.
Bear in mind that a newly installed windshield cannot yet be fully loaded and try to drive carefully for the first 48 hours after changing it. Please also remember that vignettes and badges may still have to be replaced. Your insurance company may also cover these costs. The operators of toll roads usually provide a replacement for their vignettes.
