The new type classes of motor vehicle insurance have been determined: around 12 million car owners will be affected by them in 2025. Some will have to pay more – others will benefit.

Every year, drivers face a major change at the beginning of autumn: that’s when the new vehicle insurance type classes are determined for the coming year. In 2025, the contribution will change for around 12 million vehicle owners. Who will benefit from the new classification and who will have to pay more from 2025.

A total of almost 7.1 million vehicle owners in Germany will probably have to dig deeper into their pockets in the coming year. Around 5.1 million insured people are moving their car into a cheaper model class. This is what the current evaluation by the General Association of the German Insurance Industry has shown. V. (GDV) now given.

The German insurance industry (GDV) defines new type classes every year

Every year the GDV classifies the approximately 33,000 car models in Germany into type classes. The basis for this is the number and costs of damage that have been reported to the insurers. It is divided into type class lists for liability, partially comprehensive and fully comprehensive damage.

Changes to motor vehicle insurance are coming in 2025: New type classes have been defined for around 33,000 models

“Many drivers are using the publication of the new type classes to put their vehicle insurance to the test,” says Jan Schust, founder and CEO of the online comparison portal Tarifcheck.de, to the “German Press Agency”. Finally, car insurers calculate the premiums for the new year in autumn. In addition to the type classes, the regional classes published every year play an important role. “It’s no coincidence that we call the phase between October and the end of November the “changeover season.”

As a rule, a lower type class is considered cheaper than a higher one. If there are changes, the type class for most models usually only goes up or down one step. But some cars also show larger jumps. The “Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4Matic” and the “Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid 1.5” slide down two classes.

  • Liability classes from 10 to 25
  • Fully comprehensive classes from 10 to 34
  • Partially comprehensive classes from 10 to 33
