Last March, the presentation of the school map, which decides on the openings and closings of classes, had bad news in store for Épernay. In a context of demographic decline in the capital of champagne and more generally in the department (-515 pupils announced for the next school year), the nursery schools Horticulture, Jancelins and Belle Noue (device under 3 years old) and the elementary Vignes Blanches will each have one less class at the start of the school year.
Faced with this situation, the mayor of Épernay had several discussions with the academic director of the national education services, who confirmed new additional decisions: a kindergarten class will close at the Pré-aux-Coudes school, but two classes will open at the Langevin kindergarten and at the Jean-Jaurès elementary school.
In addition, the National Education has confirmed the opening of an autism kindergarten teaching unit (UEMA). A class that will accommodate up to seven students, aged three to six, with autism spectrum disorders. They will be present at school at the same time as the pupils of their age group and will benefit from pedagogical, educational and therapeutic interventions, provided by a team involving a teacher and medico-social professionals.
Épernay will therefore have, at the start of the school year, a system under 3 years old and two less kindergarten classes, the same number of elementary classes and a new UEMA. A situation deemed “less negative than expected”, by the first city councilor.
