Changes to Gema Tariff Structure Cause Concern for Music at Wine Festivals and Christmas Markets

Will there soon be no more music at wine festivals or Christmas markets? This question is currently troubling many municipalities because Gema, which manages the copyrights of its members worldwide, has changed its tariff structure. There was now a discussion between the German Association of Cities and Gema.

Previously, the area in front of the stage was considered the basis for how much fees a city had to pay to Gema for the music played at the festivals it organized. That has changed since 2019. Now there are costs for the entire event area.

This means that some municipalities now have to pay significantly more fees. This caused an outcry in some cities and municipalities, which also reached the German Association of Cities.

He met with Gema last Wednesday for a joint discussion to work out possible solutions. However, no consensus has yet been reached “that would be applicable across the board to all members of the German Association of Cities,” announced Gema press spokeswoman Nadine Remus. “The German Association of Cities wants to discuss Gema’s proposed solution in its specialist committees,” it continues. Gema would also consult internally. The press spokeswoman said no information would be given about the content of the conversation until then.
