Winds of up to 80 kilometers per hour are being reported at Phillip Island on Sunday, prompting Australian GP organizers to move the MotoGP™ main event from Sunday to Saturday as a precaution. Race for 27 laps so it will start already on Saturday October 21 in 6.10 o’clock Central European time.
Half distance race Tissot Sprint MotoGP™ starts in sunday October 22 in 5.00 hours Central European Time.
Race schedule for classes Moto3™ a Moto2™ remains, at least for now, unchanged.
In 2019, due to the weather and wind gusts of around 50 kilometers per hour, they canceled the Saturday qualification. Miguel Oliveira was then blown off the track by a gust of wind when he was driving at full speed. So it’s clear to all that if the wind is reported between 70 and 80 kilometers per hour, the riders will definitely have a problem at Phillip Island. “The forecast for this Sunday is very similar to four years ago,” Dorna’s sporting director said on Friday Carlos Ezpeleta. “As we always emphasize, the safety of the riders and everyone who takes part in the race is the most important factor. After a meeting with the teams, it was unanimously decided to swap the sprint and main race to ensure the most important race of the weekend. We have come a long way to Australia and it is important that the fans can also see the main race.”
As for Sunday’s program, there are both Moto3™ and Moto2™ races, plus a MotoGP™ sprint. The promoter and the organizer will know a more accurate forecast only tomorrow, so there may still be some changes. “Of course we will respond according to the forecast for Sunday,” continued Ezpeleta. “We will try to do a complete program of Moto3™, Moto2™ and sprint MotoGP™ races. If the weather permits, of course. But if we have to stop the race, we will do so with safety in mind.”
Former racer Loris Capirossitoday a representative of the plant management, commented on the change during an extraordinary press conference: “Rain is not the main problem. The problem is the wind here, which can change direction really quickly. According to the forecast, winds of around 70 kilometers per hour can be expected on Sunday, and that is certainly a lot. In 2019, we had winds here around 50, 55, 60 kilometers per hour. That’s why we decided to change.”
“In 2019, when there was a problem with the wind and we canceled qualifying, it was the first years of aerodynamics on bikes. Now we have more experience with aerodynamics and partly because of that we understand more about how the wind and these conditions affect the bikes themselves,” added the plant manager Mike Webb.
