Changes in Enlistment Age for Soldiers, Sailors, and Officers in the Reserve: Impact on Russia’s War Against Ukraine

Soldiers, sailors and instructors in the reserve will be able to be drafted until the age of 55, while the maximum enlistment age of reserve officers up to the rank of captain has been raised to 60.

The enlistment age for senior officers has been increased to 65, and for generals – to 70.

These changes were obviously made to prevent a shortage of cannon fodder in the war against Ukraine. Last fall, 300,000 reservists were already mobilized to provide the Russian army with manpower after the losses suffered in Ukraine.

Although Moscow has consistently denied that it was planning another mobilization, experts predict that another wave of conscription is expected given the problems facing Russian troops at the front.
