Changes in Carrefour’s board of directors. The group could leave Eastern European markets

The resignations come after last week the billionaire Bernard Arnault sold his 5.7% stake in Carrefour, through his holding company Financiere Agache, obtaining 724 million euros as a result of the transaction.

Carrefour has also announced that it will appoint Arthur Sadoun, chairman and chief executive officer of advertising company Publicis, as director and independent member of the Board, and the appointment could be approved at the next shareholders’ meeting.

Bernard Arnault’s decision to sell his stake is surprising, given the attractiveness of Carrefour’s geographical realignment, with business in Taiwan and Eastern Europe likely to be sold to the group to focus on its core markets in Western Europe and Brazil. , said Bryan Garnier, an analyst at Clement Genelot. He considers the decision to be a negative signal.

Carrefour achieved a turnover of 78.609 billion euros in 2020, increasing by 7.8% in terms comparable to 2019. At the end of last year, the Carrefour group had a total number of 13,048 stores, of which 369 in Romania distributed thus: 40 hypermarkets, 193 supermarkets, 168 convenience stores and 28 Cash & Carry stores.
