San Francisco’s mayor and police chief have vowed “changes” after a night of massive looting, a crime that is increasingly common in the city and which is driving businesses away.
Many stores, including Louis Vuitton and Bloomingdale’s, were hit on Friday night in a wave of massive looting hitting businesses in Union Square, California.
At a press conference on the attack on businesses on Saturday, the Mayor of London Breed pledged “Changes” to the area which will limit access by car after the « horrible » night of crime. Police chief Bill Scott also pointed out that the infrastructure changes were a measure that would prevent future mass thefts.
“We have to make it difficult for people to do what they did last night. Stop right next to a business, smash windows, erase anything they can carry, get straight into their cars parked at the curb and drive away ”, Scott said, adding that eight people have been arrested in what police believe are planned robberies.
Some of the looting was filmed, with few police in sight and many thieves passing through the police without resistance.
At first glance, I thought it was people thrown to the ground. Reality: Louis Vuitton was emptied by robbers on Friday night. I passed Burberry where maybe a dozen others were starting to vandalize or break in. The windows of FENDI and YSL were also broken. #SanFranciscopic.twitter.com/cVsstKTIg2

Scott said the police “Flood” the area where the thefts took place for the “The foreseeable future. “
“We will do what it takes to put an end to this madness”, he said.
In addition to the Friday night vandalism and looting, a Nordstrom store in Willow Creek was hit on Saturday night by dozens of looters, who entered and looted the location within a minute, police said. Three employees were assaulted during the raid.
Images captured at the scene appear to show that most of the looters are passing the police.

Theft has become a trend in San Francisco, which has led companies like Walgreens to close many stores and other retailers to limit their hours of operation.
Activists pointed out that the city is making the theft of items worth less than $ 950 a crime as a major factor in the increase in theft and its subsequent effects on businesses.
The theft in the city has reached the point where videos of criminals easily scamming businesses have become increasingly common on social media, often making the city a focal point for some critics.
This is how we fight income inequality in San Francisco, by encouraging crime and reducing the quality of life for everyone. It’s a Tesla streak of a smash and seizure all over the Japantown block on Tuesday night. There was nothing in the car and it was smashed anyway. pic.twitter.com/CathVZE1qf
