My AirTag has been hanging on my key ring for two years now. During this time, a couple of times the accessory really helped me out, notifying me that the keys were forgotten somewhere.
The most inconspicuous and simple “apple” device just works, without settings and reboots. Always with the keys, always on guard. So today I accidentally went to the Find My app and saw that a low battery icon appeared next to my AirTag.
In theory, the iPhone itself should signal to the owner that the battery in the AirTag is almost empty, in order to avoid embarrassing situations with the key fob turning off and the inability to find it. However, my iPhone did not show any warnings.
And the battery is almost dead!
So if, like me, you’ve been using the AirTag for several years now, it’s time to upgrade its battery. It’s very easy to do, see:
How to change the battery in AirTag
The AirTag uses a flat CR2032 lithium battery with a voltage of 3 V. This is a fairly common battery, so finding and buying a new one in the nearest hardware store is no problem.
Grab your AirTag, press down on the polished stainless steel battery cover and turn it counterclockwise until it stops. Then remove the cover and remove the dead battery.
Insert a new one, plus side up. If nothing is mixed up, AirTag will emit a sound confirming the replacement of the battery. Next, put the cover back in place by aligning the three tabs with the three slots on the accessory and turn it clockwise until it stops.
That’s it, now your AirTag will work again for several years, and when it’s time to change the battery again, I’ll remind you 🙂
