The corona crisis also hits long-haul Deutsche Bahn with all its might. During the first wave of pandemics in spring and early summer, demand practically came to a standstill due to the extensive exit and travel restrictions.
With the easing, the number of passengers in the ICE and IC then recovered, in the meantime they have at least been back to 75 percent of the actually usual level. But things have long since been on the downside, at the end of October the utilization was only 30 to 35 percent in some cases and is now likely to have fallen even further due to the partial lockdown.
New Sprinter connection
Nevertheless, DB is sticking to maintaining the full range of services and expanding it with the timetable change on December 13, 2020. On the three years ago Munich – Nuremberg – Berlin race track inaugurated with a lot of fanfare All five Sprinter connections are then also available at the weekend.
In particular, with the early connection at 5.56 a.m. from Munich (7.01 a.m. from Nuremberg), you can also reach the federal capital at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The travel time from the Pegnitz to the Spree is less than three hours.
In addition, ICE trains run every hour with stops in Leipzig, Erlangen, Bamberg or Coburg. For the north-south connections, Augsburg and Treuchtlingen in particular benefit from an additional direct connection from Hamburg to Munich.
Also on other long-distance routes such as between Nuremberg – Würzburg – Frankfurt or from Munich via Stuttgart, Augsburg and Frankfurt, capacities are to increase in the course of next year thanks to new trains, the railway speaks of 13,000 additional seats daily in the long-distance network.
Clear the way for XXL-ICE
This is made possible above all by the new backbone of the ICE fleet. More and more trains of the 4th generation, which were officially presented in September 2016, are running. The DB has already accepted 50. By 2025, the ICE 4 fleet will have grown to 137 trains.
The ICE-4 is available in three different versions. 37 trains with seven cars have been ordered from Siemens and will be delivered from 2023. The 50 vehicles with twelve cars are already in operation and with the new timetable the first of the 50 trains in the XXL version with 13 cars are to be used.
They offer a record-breaking 918 seats and are to be used on routes between North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria from September 2021. The new ICE plant in Nuremberg, which DB intends to build in Nuremberg with an investment of 400 million euros by 2028, will also be responsible for their maintenance. which, however, has already called nature conservationists and residents on the scene.

After a delay of several years, the new regional vehicles from the Czech manufacturer Škoda will soon be on the line. The trains can travel up to 200 kilometers per hour and cover the prestigious Nuremberg-Munich route in 1.45 hours. The Munich-Nuremberg Express also wants to score with new trains and also offers 676 instead of the previous 413 seats. We looked around the trains.

No need to celebrate
Other things will also change in mid-December. Completely new trains from the Czech manufacturer Skoda will then be used between Nuremberg and Munich. They will travel at almost 200 kilometers per hour on the high-speed line, which was inaugurated in 2006, and then replace the outdated IC trains that were previously used there for Germany’s fastest local transport.
They offer 676 seats and up to 37 bicycles can be taken along. There will be no big jubilee on this occasion. On the one hand because of Corona, on the other hand, because the vehicles could only be put on the track with a four-year delay.
In the Allgäu, a completely new era is heralded with the timetable change. After electrification between Munich and Lindau, the travel time to Switzerland will be shortened, from Munich to Zurich it will then take four hours. From the end of 2021 there will be only three and a half hours. The expansion of the 155-kilometer route cost a total of 650 million euros.

Waiting for the hourly cycle
Elsewhere, diesel locomotives will continue to smoke for a long time, especially in francs. But there is still a lot of trouble for the Greens parliamentary group in the Bavarian state parliament when it comes to local rail passenger transport in the Free State.
In many places there is still no continuous hourly service, such as an inquiry from the transport policy spokesman for the Landtag Greens, Dr. Markus Büchler lists 39 rail connections for which there are still no binding dates to implement the Bavaria cycle and to close the sometimes significant cycle gaps.
This affects the Pleinfeld – Gunzenhausen, Steinach – Rothenburg and Dombühl – Crailsheim routes in Central Franconia. These are listed in the state government’s answer to the Greens’ request under the heading “Routes without an hourly basic offer and without currently a specific date for timetable improvements”.
Bright spot for five sections of the route
At least there is a ray of hope for five sections of the route. The hourly service is to be introduced in December 2021 on the Roth – Hilpoltstein, Neustadt (Aisch) – Steinach, Wicklesgreuth – Windsbach, Nuremberg – Neuhaus (Pegnitz), Neunkirchen – Simmelsdorf-Hüttenbach routes.
From December 2023, Nuremberg – Bayreuth – Hof and Nuremberg – Schwandorf / Neustadt (Waldnaab) will also be included in the Bavaria cycle. The Landtag Greens have been calling for a mobility guarantee for all public transport in Bavaria for years. All places in the country should be connected at least every hour on weekdays from 5 a.m. to midnight.
