In recent weeks, the federal government has negotiated with the state of Lower Saxony, the shipyard’s management, the Meyer family, and the banks, and has made great progress, said Scholz. “The federal government is doing its part to find a solution,” assured the SPD politician. “And if everyone else pulls together – which I expect – then we’ll get it done.”
Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) also expressed optimism. The rescue of the shipyard is “within reach,” Habeck explained.
Federal and state governments want to invest 400 million euros in the company
According to insiders, the federal and state governments want to save the ailing Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg and temporarily take over the majority of the traditional company. The Meyer family will, however, be given a seat on the supervisory board and a right to buy back the shares. The rescue plan is intended to increase equity by 400 million euros. The state will also guarantee further loans. The final solution should be in place by around mid-September.
Meyer Werft needs almost 2.8 billion euros
The shipyard is in a serious crisis because, among other things, energy and raw material prices have risen and the majority of the purchase price for ships is only paid upon delivery. The ailing family business has high hopes for the visit of Chancellor Scholz. The shipyard has been waiting for weeks for the federal government and the state of Lower Saxony to agree to state participation. Meyer Werft needs almost 2.8 billion euros to be able to produce the ships it has ordered.
