Chancellor: Other States Will Expel Governor – Governor | Chancellor | Malayalam News, News from India | Manorama online

New Delhi ∙ Kerala is not the first state to move to remove the governor from the post of chancellor. In Bengal, a bill to replace the governor and appoint the Prime Minister as Chancellor was sent for approval, but then Governor Jagdeep Dhankar returned it. The governments of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra also approved a bill in the House to limit the governor’s powers.

In most states, the governor holds the office of chancellor. Meanwhile, states including Telangana and Gujarat have limited the Chancellor’s powers. Here the chancellor’s job is only to approve the name suggested by the state government.

According to the Law on the University of Gujarat, the Vice Chancellor will be appointed by the state government from among the 3 names provided by the selection committee. In Gujarat, in 2013, when Narendra Modi was Prime Minister, a bill was passed to remove all of the Chancellor’s powers. It was a continuation of the battle with the then governor Kamala Beniwal. But the governor didn’t approve it. Approval was given after 10 months when OP Koli became governor.

In Telangana, the Chancellor is appointed by the state government. According to the Forest University bill approved in September, the Chancellor is the Prime Minister of the state.

Summary in English: Other states are also planning to remove the governor from the post of chancellor
