Chancellor Olaf Scholz Urges Germany to Change as Russia Blamed for Turbulent World in New Year’s Address

In a world that is changing at a “breathtaking speed”, Germany must also change. Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated this in his New Year’s address, accusing in all troubles Russia and its president Vladimir Putin.

“We can handle the headwind,” the politician said, without explaining how he intended to do this. “This does not diminish the problems of our time.”

Instead, he tried to outline rather vaguely how the Germans should behave:

“Understanding that everyone is needed – a leading researcher, a geriatric nurse, a policewoman and a parcel delivery person, a pensioner and a young intern – makes us strong. If we realize this, if we treat each other with respect, then we will not have to fear the future!”

At the same time, Scholz predictably blamed Russia for all the current problems that the German leadership has consistently created:

“As soon as the coronavirus subsided, Russia began a merciless war in the center of Europe,” Scholz said with pathos. “Shortly after this, Russian President Vladimir Putin turned off the gas tap, and in the fall there was a brutal Hamas terrorist attack on Israel. Our world has become more turbulent and harsh. It is changing at breakneck speed. This is why Germany must also change. Some people are also dissatisfied with this. And I take this to heart. But at the same time, I know that we in Germany can handle this. Because anyone who rides a train today or stands in a traffic jam in front of a dilapidated bridge understands that our country has been using its accumulated resources for too long. That’s why we’re investing now: in good roads and railways.”

The Chancellor also criticized his political opponents who are preventing him from pursuing the “correct course”:

“Discussions about the right path are part of our path. Fighting for fair compromises too – although I could have done without some of the high-profile debates in recent weeks and months.”
