Chance to See the Northern Lights in Hamburg: Geomagnetic Storm Approaching Earth

As of: 07/20/2023 6:09 p.m

Northern lights are a special attraction. In the night to Friday you can possibly also observe them in Hamburg. However, the planetarium estimates the chance as minimal.

According to The Weather Channel, a geomagnetic storm is currently heading towards Earth as a result of an eruption on the sun’s surface. If this hits the earth’s atmosphere, northern Germany could see aurora borealis on the night from Thursday to Friday. The geomagnetic storm’s peak activity is currently expected between 5 p.m. Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday morning. The northern lights should only be visible when it gets dark – after 10 p.m.

According to the current assessment of the Hamburg Planetarium, the probability of seeing the northern lights in Hamburg and in the higher north is minimal.

Aurora Borealis: Hamburg Planetarium explains the phenomenon

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the northern lights were particularly easy to see in February.

In February, the natural spectacle was last seen in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse. “Northern lights are luminous areas of the air at an altitude of 250 kilometers,” explained Hamburg’s planetarium boss Björn Voss at the time. Usually, the phenomenon occurs around the Arctic Circle. With particularly high solar activity, it also comes to Germany in rare cases.

Solar storms as a trigger

So-called solar storms are responsible for the greenish or reddish glow. In the process, electrically charged particles are thrown away from the sun. They need about one and a half to two days to cover the distance of around 150 million kilometers. When they enter the earth’s atmosphere, they glow.
