Novak Djokovic sees his chance at the Golden Slam go up in smoke. The Serb lost in the semifinals of the Olympic tennis tournament 6-1, 3-6, and 1-6 by the German Alexander Zverev.
Djokovic started energetically in the first set and managed to force Zverev to make a lot of mistakes. After more than half an hour of play, the first-placed tennis player took a 1-0 lead. In the second set, Zverev started to take the first blows and Djokovic made mistakes in turn: 3-6.
In the third and final set, Zverev was supreme with his serve and kept Djokovic from that coveted Golden Slam: winning the four grand slam titles in one year and winning Olympic gold.
Twenty-time grand slam winner Djokovic won all grand slam tournaments this year, but never reached the final at the Games. In 2008 the Serb won the bronze, this Olympic Games will also be the highest achievable for him.
