Apparently, that day also coincided with the celebration of Al-Yawm Al-Watani li-Qatar or Qatar National Day. Qatar National Day is the anniversary of the union of Qatar in 1878 and is also known as Founder’s Day.

And that day became a national holiday for the citizens of Qatar.

Qatar’s national day has been commemorated since 2007 by decision of the current Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who was still the crown prince at the time. Prior to 2007, Qatar’s National Day was celebrated every September 3, Qatar’s Independence Day.

On December 18, 1878, Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani succeeded his father’s throne. He then united all the tribes that were in the Qatar peninsula.
