Champions League: Real striker Benzema catches up with Lewandowski

Real Madrid lost to Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals. Karim Benzema, striker of the “Royal”, nevertheless scored twice – and moves up in the top scorer list to Lewandowski.

Two goals against Manchester City were crucial: Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema closed the gap to Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in the all-time Champions League goalscoring list.

In the 3: 4 (1: 2) defeat in the semi-final first leg at Manchester City, Benzema scored a brace for the “Royal”. He scored for his club in the 33rd minute and followed up with a penalty in the 88th minute (read more here).

Benzema just one goal behind Lewandowski

With his goals, the Frenchman increased his personal goal tally to 85. That puts him just one goal behind Lewandowski (86), who failed with Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals against Villarreal.

Manchester United’s superstar Cristiano Ronaldo continues to lead the rankings with 140 goals. Argentinian Lionel Messi (125) from new French champion Paris St. Germain is in second place. Both players were eliminated with their teams in the round of 16. Lewandowski is third on this list.
