Champions League Qualifiers: Sparta Prague’s Path to Success

Defending champion Sparta is the only one of this year’s cup representatives to start in the Champions League qualifiers. On Tuesday, FC Copenhagen will enter the 3rd preliminary round, the rematch will be played a week later at Letná. If he can handle the fight with the reigning Danish champion, he will face either the Polish champion Raków Čenstochová or the reigning Cypriot champion Aris Limassol.

The match with Raków, who were eliminated last season after a tough fight in the final preliminary round of the Conference League, was eliminated by Slavia Prague. In addition, the Serbian all-rounder Srdjan Plavšič, who previously worked in Sparta, transferred to the Polish team in the summer. From Letná, however, he headed to Slavia in a closely watched transfer in 2021, subsequently playing for Baník Ostrava.

Raków has already completed two preliminary rounds of the Champions League. In the first one, he dealt with the Estonian Flora with a total score of 4:0, then eliminated the Azerbaijani Karabakh after the results of 3:2 and 1:1. Limassol then defeated the Belarusian team BATE 6:2 and 5:3 in the 2nd preliminary round.

In the event that Letenští do not manage the double-header with Copenhagen, they will face the 4th preliminary round of the Europa League. There lurks the worse of the pair AEK Athens – Dinamo Zagreb. Both teams are the champions of their draws, Sparta played a preparatory match against Zagreb before the new season, and drew 1:1 with them at the training camp in Austria. As the only Czech team, Letenský have a certain participation at least in the group of the Conference League.

Ukrainian journey for Slavia

If Slavia advances through Dnipro-1 (home matches in Košice, editor’s note), another Ukrainian team, Zorja Luhansk, who play at home in Lublin, Poland, is threatened in the final play-off of the Europa League. While Dnipro finished second in the Ukrainian league last year, Luhansk took third place. The first Europa League play-off games will take place on August 24, with the second leg a week later. Slavia would start at home, Sparta away.

If the red and whites were to fall out with the first Ukrainian opponent, they would go to the 4th preliminary round of the Conference League, where the winner of the travel friendly pair Lech Poznaň – Trnava would await them. However, Slavia’s goal clearly remains progressing to the Europa League. Moreover, when she avoided the biggest scares in the form of the Dutch Ajax or the Belgian Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Pilsen must not hesitate on the way to the Conference League group. After the elimination of Kosovo’s Drita in the 2nd preliminary round, in the event of further progress over Malta’s Gzira, they would face the better of the two-match Tobol Kostanaj – Derry City in the final play-off.

West Bohemians can be extremely satisfied. After the opponents from Kosovo and Malta, in the event of promotion, they will receive either a representative of Kazakh football or Irish football. The path to the basic group of the Conference League is therefore open.
