Dream big! This is the motto that UEFA seems to be proceeding with in its considerations regarding the transformation of the Champions League. In addition to expanding the competition with more teams, the New York location probably also plays a role there.
This is reported by the English newspaper The Sun. The report states that UEFA wants to agree on a model with a total of 36 teams (instead of the previous 32 teams). This should take effect from the 2024/25 season. In addition, it is planned to host the final outside of Europe – namely in New York.
“Going from Portugal to Azerbaijan, for example, is almost the same as going to New York. It’s not a problem for the fans,” said UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin.
Final venues until 2024 have been determined
After he took office in 2016, the Slovenian toyed with the idea of moving the final to another continent in order to generate even more attention worldwide. At that time, however, he left the plans in the drawer again.
The final venues have already been determined by 2024. This year, the most important European soccer competition will take place in Istanbul, followed by St. Petersburg (2022), Munich (2023) and Wembley (2024).
