The essentials in brief: RB Salzburg instead of Atlético Madrid: After a curious breakdown draw, the German soccer champions FC Bayern Munich have now faced the Austrian champions as opponents in the second attempt in the last sixteen of the Champions League. That was the result of the draw on Monday at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, after the first drawing was declared invalid after several mistakes and was repeated. Bayern had initially drawn Atlético there.

The exact dates have not yet been set. The first legs of the round of 16 games in the premier class are for the 15./16. and 22./23. February, the second legs will take place on 8/9. and 15./16. March. The final will be played in St. Petersburg on May 28th.

In the other round of 16 games, the duel between PSG and Real Madrid stands out. Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool FC meet Inter Milan. The English record champions Manchester United, trained by Ralf Rangnick, will play against Atlético, and defending champions Chelsea FC with coach Thomas Tuchel will face Wolfsburg-defeated OSC Lille. The Champions League round of 16 draw must be repeated

1:47 p.m.: Now it’s official: Uefa will repeat the draw for the round of 16 of the Champions League! Due to a breakdown during the drawing, lots of balls were thrown into the wrong pots. That invalidates the whole ceremony.

Uefa explains on Twitter: “After a technical problem with the software of an external service provider who instructs the officials which teams are eligible to play against each other, there was a major error in the draw for the round of 16 of the Uefa Champions League.” At 3 p.m. the lots will be drawn again.

Big glitch in the draw – does the drawing have to be repeated?

1:38 p.m.: Does the draw have to be repeated? At the drawing in Nyon by Uefa General Secretary Giorgio Marchetti and Competition Director Michael Heselschwerdt there was a breakdown that also influenced the lot of FC Bayern.

When first group runner-up Villarreal was drawn, Marchetti correctly instructed Heselschwerdt to put the seven balls of the possible opponents in the round of 16 for “Losfee” Andrey Arshavin in the corresponding lottery pot.

However, Heselschwerdt already placed all eight balls. A mistake because Manchester United, as the Spaniards’ group opponent, was out of the question as an opponent. But Arshavin drew the ball of the “Red Devils”.

Marchetti noticed the mistake immediately and let the Russian pull another ball out of the pot, this time Manchester City came out as an opponent for Villarreal. Including a lot of confusion.

That led to the next breakdown. Because when the ball was drawn by Atlético Madrid, Marchetti explained that in addition to group opponents Liverpool, Man United would also be eliminated as opponents, especially because “Manchester United has already been drawn”.

So Heselschwerdt did not put the United lot in the top, but wrongly the ball of Liverpool FC. Error after error.
