What a performance by the German champions!
Bayer Leverkusen gives RB Salzburg no chance at 5-0 in the Champions League. Man of the evening: Florian Wirtz! The national player defeated the Austrians almost single-handedly, scored a brace – and was named Man of the Match. And on top of that, he is the first German ever to score five goals in his first five Champions League games.
And at the end there is a real Ukraine fairy tale…
Leverkusen, despite an acute shortage of personnel (3 places available on the bench), was simply really toxic, bilious and good from the start. Very reminiscent of Bayer from the previous double season. And strikes straight away.
5th minute: Salzburg’s Baidoo blocks a Schick shot in the penalty area. From there the ball bounces unhappily into his hand. For Ukraine referee Balakin, even after the video check, enough for a penalty. Wirtz says thank you and sinks the ball into the right corner with his mega shot technique to make it 1-0 (8th minute).
And three minutes later it happens again: Wirtz takes a free kick. Grimaldo hammers it straight over the wall with a lot of topspin to make it 2-0. Again no chance for Ösi keeper Schlager.
And then there’s the teamwork between the scorers: Sharp cross from Grimaldo. Wirtz sucks up the ball inimitable on the left half, curves through Salzburg’s defensive legs in the penalty area and flicks the ball into the far corner in the tightest of spaces to make it 3-0 (30′).
Schick (61st) finally makes everything clear with the 4-0. Wirtz then prepares Garcia’s 5-0 with a clever pass into the backcourt…
Wirtz after the game on DAZN: “I had an abnormally large amount of space today. More than usual. It was a lot of fun. I’m happy that I can inspire people. The goal in front of which I was able to dribble a bit was the one I liked the most about my performance.”
Nice story in the final phase: In the 73rd minute, coach Alonso brought in youth gem Artem Stepanov (17) as a joker for Schick. For the Ukrainian war refugee with the Haaland hairstyle, his professional debut is a dream come true – and right in the premier class…
Thanks to the Wirtz gala, Leverkusen now has 10 points after five games. And with two more home games (Inter and Prague) they can hope for the top 8. They qualify directly for the round of 16.
