As in the previous year, RB Leipzig qualified for the round of 16 of the Champions League. The pre-season semi-finalists defeated Manchester United 3-2 (2-0) on Tuesday evening and overtook the British in Group H, which was top-class with Paris Saint-Germain. Angeliño (2nd minute), Amadou Haidara (13th) and Justin Kluivert (69th) brought coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team into the first knockout round. Bruno Fernandes (80./foul penalty) and Paul Pogba (83.) met for the guests in the final phase. In the first leg, the Germans had received a bitter 0: 5 at the end of October.
Racism scandal in Paris
It was not yet clear at the final whistle whether the final victory for the Leipzigers would be enough to win the group. Because after a racism allegation against the fourth official, the parallel game between the French champions Paris Saint-Germain and Basaksehir Istanbul was interrupted. Both teams left after about a quarter of an hour and minutes of discussions when the score was 0-0. The guest’s assistant coach, the Cameroonian Pierre Webo, saw the red card and is said to have been racially insulted by the fourth official.
BVB take group victory, Lazio in second place
Borussia Dortmund ended the earnings crisis and reached the last sixteen of the Champions League as group winners. Despite the loss of nine professionals, coach Lucien Favre’s team achieved a 2-1 (0-1) win at Zenit St. Petersburg in the last group game. This means that BVB, without a win in three competitive games, stayed in first place in the table and increased their chances of a supposedly easier opponent in the draw for the first knockout round next Monday.
With the Dortmunders, Lazio moved into the knockout round. In the evening, the Italians won 2-2 (2-1) against Club Brugge, who had to play undernumbered from the 39th minute after the yellow-red card against Eduard Sobol. The Belgians play third in the group before Zenit after the turn of the year in the Europa League.
Ronaldo shoots Juve to win the group
In the duel between the multiple world footballers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, FC Barcelona lost the group victory. On Tuesday evening the Catalans lost 3-0 (0-2) at home against the Italian record champions Juve on Tuesday evening on the last preliminary round of the Champions League. For the first home defeat of the Spaniards in the premier class in seven years, superstar Ronaldo with a penalty double (13th / foul penalty and 52 / hand penalty) and the former Schalke Bundesliga professional Weston McKennie (20th). Turin and Barcelona finished the group with 15 points each – the better direct comparison speaks for Juve.
