Champions League – Group stage – 5th day-Teungueth FC-EST (2-1): Ben Mustapha’s blunder!

A bad exit of the “blood and gold” goalkeeper was fatal, leading the team to concede defeat in African C1 after a little more than a year of unbeaten quality in this continental event.

Lat-Dior Stadium. Teungueth FC beats EST: 2-1. (1-1 at halftime). Goals of Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane (28 ‘) for the EST; Mamou Niang (37 ‘) and Baye Djiby Diop (72’) for Teungueth FC. Arbitration by Cameroonian Ngwa Blaise Yuven.

EST: Ben Mustapha, Nagguez, Ben Hmida, Yaakoubi, Badrane, Coulibaly, Ben Romdhane, Benguit (Fadaa 84 ‘), Togui (Khénissi 67’), Khalid (Badri 58 ‘) et El Houni.

It was under a blazing sun that took place yesterday afternoon the meeting counting for the 5e day of the group stage of the African C1, pitting Senegalese club Teungueth FC and Esperance de Tunis. In addition to the hot climate, yesterday’s confrontation between the “Blood and Gold” and their Senegalese host was akin to a simple formality. EST having already secured their qualification since the previous day while Teungueth FC have lost all hope of qualifying for the quarter-finals. An absence of stake which, in addition to the hot climate, explains the absence of clear chances during the first 27 minutes of play. Indeed, the first chance of the match was recorded in the 28 ‘and brought news: Taking a direct free kick well kicked at the limit of the 16-meter zone, Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane lodged the ball in the skylight. A nice goal which confirms all the good that we think of the young Ben Romdhane. A great is born!

But the joy of the Esperantists was short-lived. All it took was a little moment of relaxation for the Senegalese to return to the match: following collective action, Mamou Niang, from a kicker, deceived the vigilance of Ben Mustapha, thus signing the equalizer goal (37 ‘ ).

Two chances, two goals: that’s all we can remember from this first half.

Bad exit …

After the break, the debates resumed as timid as during the initial period. No one seemed to be in a hurry. However, Togui was on the verge of doubling the lead at the very start of the second half, but when it came time to shoot he was hampered by an opposing defender (46 ‘). The “blood and gold” coach subsequently made changes to bring added value to the offensive animation. In vain.

On the other side, we didn’t see much. However, the Senegalese were going to take advantage of a big mistake by Farouk Ben Mustapha who made a bad exit while he was supported by Fousseny Coulibaly and was deceived by Baye Djiby Diop who took advantage of his bad replacement to house, head, the ball in the nets (72 ‘). A monumental error of Farouk Ben Mustapha which cost the defeat to the EST after a little more than a year of invincibility in African C1. His last defeat in the Champions League dates back to February 2020 in Cairo in front of Zamalek.

In short, two lessons to be learned from the exit of the EST on Senegalese soil: the very nice goal of Ben Romdhane and the big mistake of Ben Mustapha which could cost him his place as first goalkeeper.
