Champions League 2024-25 kicks off: match calendar and where to watch them on TV

Con Juventus-PSV (and Young Boys-Aston Villa) on Tuesday 17 September at 6.45pm the seventieth edition of the Champions League (formerly European Cup). It will be the debut of the new format of the competition, which will mark the farewell of the group stage for a single phase that does not differ too much from the idea of ​​the much discussed Super League.

The first change concerns the participants, increased from 32 to 36. For the first time, Italy can boast five teams: Inter, Milan, Juventus, Atalanta e Bolognawhich returns 60 years after the first time. According to the new regulations, each team will play 8 matches (4 at home and 4 away) with the top eight qualifying directly for the round of 16, while those placed from 9th to 24th will compete in a first leg play-off and back to complete the picture. The teams finishing from 25th to last place will be eliminated without relegation in the Europa League, another novelty. A long journey that will culminate with the final of Saturday 31 May 2025 all’Allianz Arena in Monaco in Baviera.

Champions, montepremi da record

More matches and more revenues in the new Champions League format. UEFA has allocated a record amount overall 2.46 billion. For the group stage, each victory will bring 2.1 million euros into the company’s coffers, in case of a draw 700 thousand euros each. Each club that plays in the playoffs (from 9th to 24th) will earn one million, those who enter the round of 16 will earn 11 million, which will become 12.5 for the quarter-finals and 15 for the semi-finals. The two finalists will receive 18.5 million and whoever lifts the trophy on Saturday 31 May in Munich will have a further bonus of 6.5 million.

Where to watch the Champions League on TV and streaming

The new Champions League will be visible on Sky, Amazon Prime and TV8. 185 of the 203 matches in total will be broadcast on the satellite broadcaster, the remaining 18 are part of the Prime package which, as in the past year, will broadcast a match of an Italian team on Wednesday evening. The first 6 matches have already been chosen: Manchester City-Inter (18/9), Leipzig-Juventus (2/10), Young Boys-Inter (23/10), Inter-Arsenal (6/11), Aston Villa-Juventus ( 27/11) and Juventus-Manchester City (11/12). New for free-to-air matches: it will not be possible to watch the Italian matches. In fact, Sky has decided to broadcast a foreign match on TV8 every day (it will start on Wednesday with PSG-Girona).

The dates of the Champions League

With the exception of the first day, divided into three days (from 17 to 19 September), and the last with all the matches at the same time, from the second round onwards they will always be played on the traditional days of Tuesday and Wednesday at 6.45pm and 9pm.
