Champions Hockey League – Freiburg runs over Eisbären Berlin – ZSC struggles to a mini-victory – Sport

  • In the Champions Hockey League, Fribourg-Gottéron got rid of their frustration with a 9:3 win against the Eisbären Berlin – their 3rd win in their 5th CHL game.
  • The ZSC Lions also won at home against the Sheffield Steelers, but only in a penalty shootout.

Fribourg-Gottéron – Eisbären Berlin 9:3

The Freiburg team, who are in deep crisis in the National League, used the Champions League to rebuild their self-confidence. The “Dragons” shot the Eisbären Berlin (3rd in the German Ice Hockey League) out of the BCF Arena with a score of 9:3 – their 2nd win in their 2nd home game in the “premier class”. After 5 games, Fribourg-Gottéron is in 6th place with 10 points.

The unleashed home team in the middle third ensured the (class) difference. In less than 9 turns of the clock, coach Patrick Emond’s team went from 3:1 to 8:1 between the 22nd and 31st minutes. It felt like every Freiburg shot was possible. This angered Eisbären goalie Jonas Stettmer so much that he quickly smashed his stick and had himself substituted after conceding the 8th goal.

The 18-year-old striker Jan Dorthe did a lot of self-promotion. While he is still waiting for his debut goal in the National League after 9 appearances, he scored a hat trick against the Eisbären. Christoph Bertschy, Killian Mottet and Yannick Rathgeb were other players who are still waiting for their first taste of success in the National League.

ZSC Lions – Sheffield Steelers 2:1 n.P.

The ZSC Lions are one place and one point ahead of Freiburg, having already celebrated their 4th victory in their 5th Champions League game. But the leader of the National League had to worry a lot more about this. Mainly because the Sheffield Steelers, who played surprisingly well in the premier class, made life really difficult for the people of Zurich.

So difficult that even the penalty shootout had to go into overtime. The Canadian Daniel Leavens, who had already equalized 1-1 in the 33rd minute, converted the 5th penalty to make it 2-2 after Juho Lammikko’s successful attempt. But because Rudolfs Balcers then put his second penalty into the net, the home team grabbed the extra point. It was Balcers who gave ZSC a 1-0 lead (17th), like last Sunday in Davos.

With this victory, the ZSC Lions are already in the round of 16. Both Zurich and Freiburg will play their 6th and final game next week.
