Champay Soren Sworn in as Jharkhand Chief Minister After Governor Controversy & MLA Smuggling Dilemma

Ranchi: JMM leader Champay Soren will be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand today. Governor CP Radhakrishnan invited Champay Soren to take oath. Majority must be proved within 10 days. Earlier, the Governor did not invite Champay Soren to take oath as the Chief Minister despite 43 MLAs being mobilized at the Raj Bhavan after declaring a majority. Champai approached again yesterday after Wednesday night but Governor CP Radhakrishnan did not take a decision. Jharkhand was in a state of ungovernance after Hemant Soren, who had resigned as Chief Minister, was arrested by the ED and was not replaced.

Earlier, JMM-Congress-RJD MLAs reached the Ranchi airport to fly to Hyderabad, suspecting a coup move, but to no avail. Flights from Ranchi’s Sirsa Munda airport were canceled in response to MLAs’ move to Hyderabad. Flights were canceled due to bad weather.

With this, the MLAs boarded the plane and returned. Meanwhile, Congress MLA Amba Prasad said that the flight was not canceled and the time was only changed. An attempt was made to bring the MLAs to Hyderabad in two chartered flights. Buses were prepared outside the Hyderabad airport to take the MLAs arriving in Hyderabad to the resorts.

The JMM said that they are trying to avoid the BJP grabbing the MLAs. PCC President Rajesh Thakur said BJP will not hesitate to do anything. Champay Soren, who was nominated by JMM for the post of Chief Minister, also reached the airport along with the MLAs.

When Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan did not invite Champay Soren to form the government, the move to smuggle MLAs out of the state started. Champai Soren reached the Raj Bhavan and handed over the video proving his majority to Governor CP Radhakrishnan. Champay Soren says that they did not give permission to form the government despite handing over the letter that proved the majority. Raj Bhavan sources informed that the process will start soon. Champay Soren came out to Raj Bhavan with MLAs. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has released a video of him standing with 43 MLAs. JMM has released a video showing their presence by shouting one, two and three as the camera moves.

The governance crisis arose when the ruling coalition gave a letter of support to Governor CP Radhakrishnan from 47 MLAs proposing Backward Welfare and Transport Minister Champay Soren as the new Chief Minister, but he sent them back without informing them of the decision. Champay Soren had said that all the MLAs had reached the Raj Bhavan but were not allowed to enter. The governor replied that he should check the documents. Concerns were also raised that the governor’s move to impose President’s rule has been raised citing that the administrative system has broken down in the state.

Meanwhile, when rumors spread that the BJP was trying to poach the JMM MLAs, it was decided to transfer all the MLAs of the JMM-Congress alliance to Hyderabad in chartered flights. It will not be easy for the JMM leadership to keep the party together in Soren’s absence. The BJP sees this as an opportunity to mow down its main rival JMM in the state. The ruling party comprising JMM, Congress and RJD has 47 MLAs; 6 seats more than absolute majority.
